Chapter 8: Cody's Truth
The man in the white coat took Veronica away by the elbow.
She went without a word, and she did not look back at the camera.
Morven took Mrs. Frawley straight into a bay and shut the curtain, and the nurse followed with a wheelchair and a clipboard.
I stood in the hallway with Dale and his son.
Nobody said anything for a long moment.
"Say the rest of it," Dale said.
Cody leaned against the wall, out of breath.
"She told us she was a trauma surgeon," he said. "I believed it for the first six months. She came to the farm last Christmas and looked at Mom's chart and said, 'That valve's going to need to be replaced soon.'"
"That's true," I said. "It was."
"I know." He wiped his face with his sleeve. "But I found her résumé in a drawer when I was doing her filing. It said Animal Science. There was nothing about medical school anywhere. I asked her about it."
"What did she say?"
"She said she'd made a mistake in the way she told it, and she'd tell the truth when the time was right. She said it was just a simple lie, and nobody got hurt by it."
Dale made a sound in his throat.
"She told you all that her husband died," Cody went on. "She told me he was alive and cold, and she was leaving him after New Year's. She said she wanted a quiet life with a man who wasn't scared of her work."
"And you believed her."
"I wanted to."
"You lied to your mother's face about her heart."
