Chapter 26: Stefan Offers the Boat House
Stefan's POV
I did not sleep after the diner.
At three in the morning I walked the length of the marina's winter boat house with a flashlight and a tape measure.
It was a long steel building with a poured concrete floor, forty feet wide and a hundred and twenty long, where I stored members' boats from November to April.
It had a heating system I had installed for the hulls, and a bathroom, and a kitchenette with a stove.
It had never been a home for anyone.
By sunrise I had a list.
Bunk beds for fourteen.
A partition wall for privacy, and a second bathroom, and a dryer.
A fire inspection.
A caseworker's office.
At seven I called the director of a licensed foster agency in Sandusky, a woman I had once sold a pontoon boat.
I told her I had a heated building and a hundred and fifty thousand dollars from savings and a sailboat.
I told her there were fourteen children who might need a place in three weeks.
