Chapter 39: Restitution

Stefan told me what she said in the parking garage.

The engine of his truck was off, and the dashboard clock was the only light.

"She said: I did love you."

I waited.

"That's all. I did love you. Keep the marina."

"What did you say?"

"Nothing." He rubbed his face with both hands. "I don't know what to do with it, Dell. I think it's true. I think it's the only true thing she's said to me in thirty years, and it doesn't change anything."

"It doesn't have to."

"No."

I put my hand on the back of his neck, and he leaned into it.

We sat there until Cass tapped on the window with a box of cold pizza.

She said the girls were asleep in the hotel, all fourteen, in two rooms, with the cat.

The restitution hearing was held in January, in the same high courtroom in Port Ansel.

It was snowing.

The gallery was packed to the doors.

Some of the women in the front row had been there for every session since October.
