Chapter 5: The Judge's Offer

Dell's POV

The Ashland County Courthouse had a brass rail on the steps and a metal detector that beeped at my belt buckle.

I had slept four hours on Cass's couch and eaten half a bagel, and I had a printed copy of the 2005 court order folded in my jacket.

The video had been up for two days.

Cass said it had sixty thousand views, which meant that half the people in the courthouse lobby looked at me and then looked away.

A woman in the elevator said, "Honey, good for you," and got off at the second floor before I could answer.

The probate clerk's window was at the end of a long hall.

The clerk was a heavy man in a short-sleeved shirt who looked at my driver's license for a long time.

"Mazur," he said. "Delphine."

"Dell."

"I have to tell you something, and I'd like you to know I'm not happy about it." He lowered his voice. "The trust file for the Lakeshore settlement is under review."

"By whom?"

"The Judge pulled it Saturday night," the clerk said.

"Judge Hasek?"

"He's the trustee of record. He's allowed to." The clerk shrugged. "You can request a copy of the docket sheet. That's public. The file itself, I can't give you."

"I'm a beneficiary," I said. "It's my money."

"I know." He looked at my face for a second. "I know, and I'm sorry."

I took the docket sheet he printed.

It was four pages, and every entry on it was the same: Annual accounting filed. Approved. C. Hasek, Guardian Ad Litem.

Twenty-one years of approvals, and not one challenge.

I stood in the hall and read it standing, because I could not make myself sit.
