Chapter 9: The Sisters at One Table

Dell's POV

The knock came at two in the morning.

It was soft, three taps, and a pause, and three more.

I was on the couch under Cass's afghan, and Cass was asleep on the floor with a pillow on her face.

She woke first.

"That's Sabina," she said, without moving the pillow.

"How do you know?"

"She's the only person in the world who knocks twice on purpose."

I sat up.

My heart was going hard, and I hated it.

Cass opened the door, and Sabina stood on the landing in a gray coat, with a paper bag in both hands and her glasses fogged from the cold.

She looked smaller than she had at the gala.

She looked like a child who had gone to the wrong house.

"I brought pierogi," she said.

Nobody moved.

"They're potato and cheese," Sabina said. "From the church sale. I thought, if nobody's eaten."

"It's two in the morning," I said.

"I know."

"You handed me a trespass notice eleven days ago," I said.

"I know."

"With your name on it."

"I know that, Dell." Her voice shook, and she steadied it. "I came to say I'm sorry, and I don't have anything else to say."

"That's not nothing," Cass said quietly.

"It's not enough, either," I said.

I got off the couch and stood in the middle of the room in Cass's old sweatpants.
