Chapter 4: Enough

Nobody finished dinner.

Harish sent the aunt home in the car and told the cook to clear the table.

Rhea went upstairs with her face in her hands, and Dev's aunt held her arm the whole way up.

Mira stayed where she was, with the phone still lit in her hand.

The video played to the end by itself.

When she looked up, Dev was standing by the dining room door.

"Come upstairs," he said.

In the bedroom he shut the door and stood with his hand on the knob for a moment before he let go.

"You followed her," he said.

"I followed a message that someone else was reading."

"You can't know that."

"I can," Mira said. "Watch the video."

"I don't need to watch it." His voice was low and very tired. "I know my sister."

"You know who you have decided she is."

His jaw tightened. He sat down on the edge of the bed and rubbed his forehead with the heel of his hand.

"Mira, she came to this house at nine years old with one suitcase."

"I know."

"She has never had anyone but us. When Maa died, she was the one who ran everything. She made every meal for a year."

"I know that too."

"Then you know why I can't let her sit downstairs crying while my wife accuses her in front of my father."

He said it gently. That was what made it hard to bear.

"What do you want me to do?" Mira asked.

"Go down in the morning. Say you were upset. Say you were mistaken about what you saw."
