Chapter 7: Only Chamomile

Jenna and I went back to the house on Saturday morning for my passport and my drawing tablet.

I had not planned to find Gwen there.

Her white SUV was parked at the curb, and the ring light was on the dashboard.

"Stay in the car," I told Jenna.

"No."

We went up the walk together.

The front door was unlocked.

I could hear the kitchen faucet running, and I could hear two voices talking low.

We came in without a sound.

Gwen stood at my kitchen sink in her linen set with her sleeves pushed up.

Dean was beside her, holding a trash bag open.

On the counter lay a row of small foil pouches with her silver moon on the front.

She was tearing them open one at a time and shaking the dried leaves into the drain.

"All of it," she was saying. "Every pouch, and the tin from the guest room. Rinse the mug."

"Okay," Dean said.

"Don't leave anything for her to find."

"What are you doing?" I said.

They both turned.

Dean dropped the trash bag.

Gwen put the half-empty pouch down on the counter and smiled at me.

"Willa. I'm so glad you're here. We were just cleaning up for you. Dean's been a wreck, and I've been helping him get the house ready for when you come home."
