Chapter 17: One Dollar
Sam's POV
The bank opened at nine on Monday, and I was on the steps at ten to.
I had not worn a tie since my father's funeral.
I wore one now, and I hated it.
Leah had read me the board's email twice on Sunday.
Friday at six, a vote to send her name to the county prosecutor.
I had told her the farm came first today, and then Friday was ours.
She had said nothing, and gone out to feed the hens.
Her silence worried me more than the bank did.
Delaney came up the sidewalk at five to nine, in a plain gray sweater and no makeup.
Bev had driven her.
She stopped two steps below me and looked at my tie.
"You look like a man going to jail," she said.
"You look like you slept."
"Four pancakes," she said. "Bev counted."
I had not seen my sister's real face in a year.
Under the lipstick and the wrap dresses, it was still the face from our father's kitchen.
"Tabby," I said.
"Don't. If you're nice to me I'll cry on the bank."
"I'm not going to be nice."
"Good."
"I'm going to ask you what you signed."
She took a long breath.
"In October," she said. "In Adele's study.
"A paper saying Halvorsen Homes could buy my half of the orchard at a set price, whenever I decided to sell.
"She said it was a formality for the engagement.
"She said you'd come around, and then it would all be family land."
"And you signed."
"I signed it in green ink," Delaney said. "She picked the pen."
The loan officer's office had a window onto Main Street and a framed print of a barn.
He was a polite man in his fifties.
He did not look at me when he said good morning.
"Mr. Fisk. I want you to know this wasn't my decision."
"Whose was it?"
"The call provision is in your note. A change in the interest of any co-owner lets the bank accelerate.
