Chapter 10: The Boardroom

The vote is already happening when we walk in.

Eleven chairs around a black table on the fortieth floor.

Nine are full.

Nobody looks up when the door closes behind me.

I'm still in my stained scrubs.

Margaret's blood is under my nails.

Damien stays standing at the head of the table, hand on the back of his chair.

"Whose motion is this?"

"Mine," Gareth says.

He sits at the table's midpoint, camel coat folded neatly beside him.

"A leak at this level is a breach of fiduciary duty. The source sits in Mr. Kastar's home."

"The source sits in your pocket," Damien says.

"Careful. There are minutes being taken."

A woman at the far end lifts her pen.

"Mrs. Kastar's building access will be revoked," Gareth says. "Her badge, her guest rights, any privilege this company has extended her."

"She has no badge," Damien says. "She has a seat in my life."

A murmur crosses the table.

"That isn't a corporate asset, Damien."

"Then you have no motion."

An older man with a white mustache clears his throat.

"The question before us is simple. Do we separate Ms. Sinclair from the building until the review is done?"

"No," Damien says.

"Then you'd rather separate yourself from this board?"

I look at Damien.

His face shows nothing.

"Say it plainly," he says to Gareth.
