Chapter 16: Mine

Adelina's POV

"Nothing hot," I told Beatriz Armijo in her doorway. "Nothing with a valve. Everything else in the basket is wicker, and you can hold that."

She gave me one small nod, the one she gave a good pot of posole, and went back inside.

Eloy walked me down through the zaguan to my truck.

He kept his hands in his pockets the whole way.

At the gate I turned around and looked up at him.

"Get in your truck," I said.

"Where are we going?"

"Your bedroom. I haven't seen it."

He did not move.

"Del, you said you weren't done being angry."

"I'm not angry about tonight," I said. "Tonight you said every one of those things out loud and asked for nothing, and I'd like to be paid for it."

"That isn't why I said them."

"I know. That's why I'm paying."

He made a sound that was half laugh and half something rougher.

Then he got in his truck, and I followed his taillights down the ditch road.

His bedroom was at the back of the old adobe farmhouse.

The walls were two feet thick and whitewashed, and the quilt on the iron bed was faded red and white.

The window stood open on the acequia, and I could hear the water going by in the dark.

He stood in the middle of the floor, a big man in a room that suited him exactly.

I shut the door and leaned my back against it.

"Take your jacket off," I said.

He took it off and hung it on the bedpost.
