Chapter 23: Christmas Table
On Christmas Eve the table at the hacienda sat thirty-one people, and Beatriz had put me at her right hand.
Nobody sat two chairs away from anyone.
Eloy sat beside me with his knee against mine under the cloth, and nobody said a word about it.
The foreman's wife had brought tamales by the hundred.
The foreman's grandchildren ran under the table in a pack, and one of them stopped at my chair and looked up.
"Piloto," he said. "When do we ride the chile?"
"Tonight," I said. "If your grandfather lets you."
"My grandfather lets me do everything," the boy said, and the foreman, at the far end, put a hand over his face.
The posole came around, red and steaming.
The old woman from the farm stand line sat on Beatriz's left and ate three bowls and told me I was too thin.
When the plates were cleared, Beatriz rose.
She did not tap a glass.
She stood at the head of the table with her hands on the chair back, and thirty-one people went quiet.
