Chapter 14: The Church Lot

The Methodist church lot was empty at four in the morning.

Zachary parked his truck behind the hedge at the far end and turned off the lights.

"I'll be right here," he said.

"She said alone."

"She said it to you. She didn't say anything to the truck."

Melinda got out and crossed the wet gravel in her father's old barn coat.

A small grey car rolled in at ten past four with its headlights off.

Bianca got out in a long coat over pajama pants.

Her auburn hair hung loose, and she wasn't wearing the brace.

Her right wrist was swollen and yellow-green to the knuckles.

"It's not tennis," Bianca said.

"I know."

"Do you?" Her teeth were chattering. "Do you know what I did to deserve you being kind to me for two weeks?"

"Tell me what you came to say."

Bianca looked at the church steps and sat down on the bottom one.

Melinda stayed standing.

"You found the deed that night," Bianca said. "You'd gone through the study looking for your passport, and you found the blue folder. You walked into the kitchen with it and said you were leaving."

Melinda kept her face still.

"Leland tried to talk you down. You said you were taking Posy to your mother's and calling the sheriff from the road. You'd already gotten her out of bed. She was in your arms in the hall, in her nightgown."

Melinda's hands closed in the coat pockets.

"He took her from you," Bianca said. "He just lifted her out of your arms and put her on the stairs. He told her to go up. Then he told you the car keys were by the door."

"He let me go."

"He wanted you in the car. He had the Audi running before you reached the end of the drive."

Bianca's voice thinned.
