Chapter 28: The Last Word

I went three days later.

Aurek swam with me as far as the last broken tower of the Wreck Deep.

"I'll wait here," he said.

"You don't have to."

"I know." He sat down on the stone with his bandaged shoulder. "I'll wait anyway."

The Drowned Kings' cage stood on the very lip of the abyss, a day's swim past the city.

It was older than the chain room. Older than the flagship.

Great iron bars, black with rust, made a dome over a shelf of rock.

On the far side of the shelf, the seabed just ended.

The water beyond it was black all the way down.

Two vent-folk captains guarded the gate. They let me in and swam off to wait out of earshot.

Isveth sat at the back of the cage with her knees drawn up.

They'd given her a plain gray gown.

The color the court gave to mourners and spare daughters.

The scales on her jaw had spread down her neck. They caught the faint light.

"You came," she said.

"You said there was something I didn't know."

"There's a lot you don't know." She smiled, a little. "But yes. One thing."

I waited.

"You asked me on the balcony how I died," she said. "The first time."
