Chapter 10: Not a Weapon

My mother left without another word.

Her taillights went down the drive, and I stood in the hall with the front door still open and the night air on my arms.

"Nine letters," I said.

"Yes."

"Where did you send them?"

"To your mother's house. You were at college. I didn't know any other address."

"And she kept them."

"I don't know that."

"You know it."

He didn't argue.

I shut the door, and the hall seemed too small.

"Everyone in my life has known something about me that I didn't," I said. "Porter knew. Bree knew. My mother knew. Now you."

"Millicent."

"My own father's grave has had flowers on it for nine years, and nobody told me whose they were."

"Come into the study."

"No. Say it here."

"I can't say it here." He ran a hand through his hair. "Please."

It was the first time he had said please to me.

I followed him in, and he closed the door.

The screens had gone dark, and the lamp on the desk was the only light.

"My mother says I'm a weapon," I said.

"Your mother is wrong."

"She's right about one thing. You wanted the Winslows, and I was a door."

"You were never a door."

"You asked for me by name before the party was even over."

"Yes."

"Why?"

He crossed the room in three steps, and I thought he was going to touch me.

He stopped a hand's width away.

"Because I've known who you were for fourteen years," he said. "I knew your name before you had ever heard mine. I know your father's hands. I know what he was holding when I found him."

My breath stopped.

"And you didn't tell me."

"I'm telling you now what I can."

"Not as a weapon," I said. "Say it."
