Chapter 6: Thursday

"Get back in your car, Richard," Keir said.

Richard Winslow didn't move.

He kept his eyes on me.

His hand was shaking so hard he put it in his pocket.

"Millicent, my dear. Whatever he tells you about me, ask yourself why he waited."

"Waited for what?" I said.

Keir stepped in front of me.

"Now," he said, very quietly.

Richard looked at him for a long second.

Then he got back into the car.

The driver pulled away, and Porter and Bree were left standing in the road.

The photographers shot all of it.

By noon the clip was everywhere.

By evening the gate had stopped ringing.

For six nights we ate at that long table.

Keir said almost nothing at one end, and Finn said everything at the other.

On Thursday Keir didn't come to dinner at all.

At half past five I stood at my window and watched a black sedan leave the drive with him in it.

He carried flowers on the passenger seat.

I couldn't see which kind.

Finn leaned in my doorway with his hands in his pockets.

"He's gone," he said. "Now's your chance."

"He told me not to follow him."

"He told you that so you would."

"That's not how rules work."

"It's how my brother's rules work." Finn held out a ring with a single key on it. "Take the Jeep. It's loud. Stay three cars behind him and don't use your brights."
