Chapter 24: The First Run
The first thing Merrick did as Alpha was go to the stone circle with a sledgehammer.
He did it the morning after the pit, with half the pack watching from the trees.
The Moon Keeper was waiting for him on the flat altar stone, in his grey cloak, with his face half in shadow.
"You hold the right to ask," the Keeper said.
"I'm not asking," said Merrick. "I'm telling you. No more gold."
The Keeper looked at him for a long time.
Then he opened his hand, and the gold light lay on his palm, small and bright as a coin.
"It was made to be taken," he said. "It was never made to be kept."
"Then it ends."
"As the Alpha wills."
Merrick raised the hammer.
He brought it down on the altar stone, and the stone cracked down the middle.
The gold light went out.
For one second the circle was very quiet.
"The silver remains," the Keeper said, and for the first time I heard something in his voice that might have been a smile. "For those who reach for it."
He stepped back into nothing, and he was gone.
That was three weeks ago.
Tonight was the full moon.
I stood at the edge of Cold Creek in the dark, barefoot on the frozen bank, with the whole pack behind me.
Merrick stood at my side. Pippa stood on my other side in a puffy coat, holding a thermos.
