Chapter 5: The Feed Store
Pippa slept on the cabin floor with a quilt and refused to let Merrick give her the bed.
In the morning she ate four eggs and told me everything.
"They moved your things out of the house," she said. "Your mother cried, then she nodded, then she locked your door."
"Of course she did."
"Lorna's room has a gold ribbon on the knob."
"Of course it does."
"You need boots," Pippa said. "Real ones. Your sock feet are going to get frostbite, and I will not be the friend who let you die for a man."
"I'm not dying for a man."
"You're dying a little," she said, and eyed Merrick at the stove. "But he's very nice to look at."
Merrick did not turn around. His ears went red.
The only store that did not belong to the pack was Halvorsen's Feed and Supply, on the county road just past our border.
Merrick drove us there in a rattling blue truck.
"I'll wait outside," he said, and parked at the edge of the lot.
"Why?"
"Because half the pack shops here on Saturdays, and I'm the thing they were raised to spit at." His hands stayed on the wheel. "If I walk in, there's a fight. I don't want you to have to pick one on your first day."
"Merrick."
"Go. I can hear you from here."
He tapped his own ear, and the silver hummed under my ribs.
Inside, Pippa dragged me to the boot wall, and I tried on three pairs of boots before I heard the bell on the door.
The shop went quiet.
Torin stood in the doorway with four young hunters behind him.
