Chapter 22: The Burn Ward
Nobody in the bay breathed.
The scanner hissed.
Then a third voice, a chief's, calm and fast, asking for a head count from Engine 41.
The lieutenant stood under the television with his arms folded so tight his knuckles were white.
The youngest niece asked why everybody was quiet, and her uncle said shh in a voice I'd never heard him use.
I held Margo so hard she squirmed.
Winifred reached out from her chair and closed her good hand around my wrist.
She didn't say anything.
She just held on.
Ten agonizing minutes dragged by on the clock over the bay doors.
Then the lieutenant's phone rang in his pocket.
He listened.
He closed his eyes.
"He's out," he said. "He's out. He carried a security guard down a stairwell with the ceiling on fire. He's burned. Arm. They're taking him to the burn unit at Mass General."
My knees went.
The big guy caught me under one elbow and Margo under the other.
"Go," Winifred said. "Give me the baby. Go."
"You can't hold her. Your arm."
"Then the large crying gentleman will hold her, and I will supervise." She waved her good hand at the door. "Go, Clementine."
The probie drove me in Cormac's truck, because his keys were on the hook by the kitchen.
He ran four red lights.
The burn unit was on the fourth floor.
It smelled like antiseptic.
A nurse in a paper gown walked me down a hall.
"Second-degree," she said. "Left forearm, wrist to elbow. Some deeper patches. He'll probably need a small graft. His lungs look good. He's very lucky and very annoying."
"Annoying how?"
"He keeps asking what the guard's oxygen saturation is."
Cormac was sitting up in a narrow bed in a hospital gown.
