Chapter 8: Supervised
Valerie wore cream, with her hair down.
She looked like a christening.
Bradford walked up the aisle slowly, so everyone could see the baby in his arm, and sat at the table across from mine with his lawyer in the gray coat.
He didn't look at me once.
He looked at the judge, and he rocked his son, and he smiled down at him.
My lawyer leaned over.
"Is that his?"
"Yes."
"Born when?"
"Seven minutes after mine."
She wrote something down and underlined it twice.
The judge came in. She was gray-haired and short and looked like she'd heard every lie in Suffolk County twice.
Bradford's lawyer stood first.
He read paragraph six in a sad, careful voice. The ICU. Nine days. Psychiatric evaluation.
Then he lifted a single sheet of paper.
"From the maternity unit, the morning of April 9," he said. "The nurse's chart note. 'Husband reports patient speaking to a person not present. Patient stated "No" and "I'm not leaving her" to an empty part of the room. Patient agitated. Husband removed at patient's request.'"
He let that sit.
"Mr. Kingsford is not asking to punish his wife, Your Honor. He's asking to protect his daughter while his wife gets the help she needs."
Bradford bowed his head.
Valerie touched his shoulder.
The judge looked at the baby in Bradford's arm.
"Mr. Kingsford," she said. "Whose child is that?"
Bradford lifted his chin. "Mine, Your Honor."
"And the child we're here about. Also yours?"
"Yes."
"Born the same day."
"The same morning."
"To two different women."
"Yes, Your Honor."
The judge took her glasses off.
The courtroom was so quiet I could hear the clerk's pen.
"Go on, counsel," she said.
My lawyer called Cormac.
