Chapter 16: The Will

The supply room smelled of bleach and warm cotton.

Rocco and I stood shoulder to shoulder at the vent, with the lights off.

On the other side of the wall my father lay with his eyes shut and his mouth a little open, an old man asleep.

He was a better actor than I'd expected.

The doctor had gone out saying he'd be back in an hour.

The security man had sent word to my mother as we'd planned.

The message said he was asking for the lawyer and was changing the will tonight.

She came at once.

I heard her heels in the hall, quick and light, and the door opening and closing.

Fiora came in behind her.

"Why is she here?" my mother said, sharply.

"Security let me. I'm allowed to see Dad."

"You're allowed to stand in a corner and be quiet."

"Yes, Mama."

I felt Rocco's hand find mine in the dark.

"Emilio," Mom said, in her softest voice. "Emilio, darling, it's me."

He didn't move.

"Emilio."

She sat in the chair beside the bed.

I heard it creak.

"Is he really asleep?" Fiora whispered.

"Heavily. They've given him something."

There was a long pause.

"He's calling the lawyer," Mom said, low. "The girl got to him. He'll leave her all of it, the houses, the accounts, the seat at the table. Everything we have worked for."
