Chapter 24: The Truth, All of It
Flynn's POV
I stood on the courthouse steps and looked at the woman who had once been my wife.
Reporters shouted behind us, and Sadie waited a step away without moving.
"One thing," I said.
Joanna lifted her head.
I took out my phone and found the file I had copied from the green tablet the night before.
"This was recorded the Wednesday before the play," I said. "Milo made it for you at school and never sent it."
Her face went still.
"It's one minute. I'm sending it to your number, and that's all you get."
"Not the urn."
"Not the urn. Not a visit. Not a letter. Nothing from me." I pressed the screen. "Just what he said."
Her phone buzzed in her coat.
She took it out and looked at the little gray bar on the screen, and her hand began to shake.
"Don't play it here," I said.
"No."
"Play it when you're by yourself. All of it, to the end."
"Flynn."
"Everyone told you what to believe about me for nine years," I said. "I'm not going to tell you anything. He's the one person who never lied to you, and he's all I'm leaving you."
She pressed the phone against her chest with both hands.
I turned and went down the steps, and Sadie fell in beside me.
The sentencing came at the end of the month.
The judge gave Dane life without parole, and she read each count in the same flat voice.
Rhoda sold the big house the next week and was not seen again at any table in town.
I read it in the paper on the kitchen counter at Sadie's, and I turned the page.
On a Sunday morning in April, we took the white urn to the pond in Marsh Park.
