Chapter 1: She Was Supposed to Stay Broken, So I Let Her Think She Had
At the rejection ceremony, Sera refuses Kael's protected status when its terms erase the twins' paternity claim, then learns Lirien has discovered that Aldren moved witness Vessa into the archive.
Kael fastens the white bond cord around the other woman's wrist.
I stand before the pack with his children hidden beneath my blouse.
The cord belongs to a confirmed bond. Everyone here knows it. The elder holding the bronze bowl looks at me once, then lowers her gaze.
The council clerk removes my chair before asking whether I intend to sit. A guard takes the bronze insignia from the cushion beside it, and the space where my name was displayed disappears beneath grey cloth.
The pack watches the ceremony lose me by approved steps.
The woman beside Kael leans close enough for her white sleeve to touch his coat. She has the place that should have been mine, and she accepts it with both hands.
The children shift beneath my ribs. I press my fingers against my trouser seam and keep my face still.
They have taken my name. They do not know what else I carry.
The clerk unfolds another page. 'By order of the Alpha, Sera Ashcombe is offered protected passage beyond pack borders, with use of the old Alpha stamp at every gate.'
That stamp could carry me to the market without inspection. It could get me through the border before anyone asked why I was leaving.
The clerk turns the page. 'The offer requires permanent renunciation of the Alpha's household, authority, and bloodline claims. Sera Ashcombe must also surrender any claim for her children to bear the Alpha's name or inherit through him.'
The useful thing sits beside the wound. They have learned how to package both.
Kael faces me fully. He listens with his whole body, holding my gaze longer than comfort requires. He has never learned how to read me.
'Sera,' he says, 'you will receive safe passage, provisions, and protection until you establish yourself outside the territory.'
His protection has a price. My absence. My claim. The children's right to bear his name.
The woman touches his sleeve. 'Kael, perhaps she should not decide while everyone is watching. She looks exhausted, and I would hate for the pack to think we were being cruel.'
Her smile appears before the concern reaches her voice.
Amber light gathers around her head.
The square drops away. Spoken words remain beneath another voice, thin and close, bleeding through the shimmer.
*If she leaves, the records stay buried. If she stays, Vessa becomes a problem.*
I look at the document in the clerk's hands.
The woman continues, 'I only want what is best for the pack. You know that, don't you?'
*Find out whether she knows the name. Make him pity her before she says it.*
The amber fades. I lower my eyes. To them, defeat has a posture. I give them one.
'She is not being forced,' Kael says. 'The choice is hers.'
His voice stays formal. He arranges every word when he wants certainty to sound natural.
Three days after our bond night, Dov certified the reading that declared us false and brought it to him herself. He accepted the paper because a signed answer made rejection look responsible.
He calls that evidence.
The clerk places a leather folder on the table. A second official removes the contents: a border pass bearing the old Alpha stamp, a travel order, a sealed letter, and a pouch of coins.
The clerk weighs the pouch in his palm before offering it. 'Forty crowns. The passage remains valid only after the renunciation is signed.'
The woman closes her fingers around Kael's arm. 'That should be enough for a beginning, surely. Sera always managed her household allowance carefully.'
She says my name with the soft concern of someone discussing a servant's mistake.
I remember when she used to take coins from my drawer and leave a note promising to replace them. She always did. She always replaced less.
The clerk lifts the stamped pass. 'This is the old Alpha seal. No border guard may delay you while the order stands.'
A small, shameful pleasure touches me. They are placing the fastest road out in my hands, then asking me to burn the reason I need it.
Kael extends the folder. 'Take it. You do not need to leave tonight, but you cannot remain in the Alpha's house.'
The council head clears her throat. 'Her household key has already been surrendered.'
A guard steps forward and removes the key from my coat pocket. He does not meet my eyes. The metal presses through the fabric as he closes his hand around it.
The clerk adds, 'Her recommendation letter will return to the archive. Pack property cannot leave the territory with a withdrawn candidate.'
I once knelt before the elder who vouched for me and promised to serve the pack's laws. Now those laws make my work portable and my body disposable.
Cass stands behind the curved bench in slate wool, her hands clasped behind her back. She certified my candidacy and told the panel my lineage records were exemplary.
Now she says, 'The recommendation must be restored to the archive before the border order is executed.'
She does not look at me.
The woman in white receives a folded shawl from a pack attendant. No one offers me one. My coat is still outside with the household staff.
The attendant settles the shawl over her shoulders, then asks whether she wants tea brought to the Alpha's rooms.
'Chamomile, please,' she says. 'He has been standing for hours.'
Kael does not correct her.
A laugh moves through the pack and dies when he glances toward it.
I notice the small things because small things survive testimony. The clerk's ink is fresh. The travel order has no destination. The sealed letter carries Kael's name but no witness.
He wants me safe. He has made safety depend on surrendering the children before they can speak for themselves.
That is the shape of his fairness.
'Sign here,' the clerk says, turning the final page toward me. 'Your acceptance confirms that you abandon the candidacy and all claim for your children to inherit through the Alpha or bear his name.'
The woman in white watches my hand.
Her thoughts return before her smile does.
*She will sign. She has nowhere else to go.*
The amber shimmer opens around her head again. This time I isolate the thought and hold it still. Sound drains from the square. Her sentence hangs before me in full color, followed by another fragment buried beneath it.
*The seal is still locked away. Aldren kept his promise.*
The market road rises in my mind. Dov's back room. Maren's waiting face. The black river-glass disc beneath Aldren's keys.
Sound returns.
Kael's hand remains extended. 'You are free to refuse the protection.'
'I know.'
His eyes narrow by a fraction. 'You are not required to sign immediately.'
'You have already required the answer.'
The woman in white touches his wrist. 'Please do not make this harder than it has to be.'
I turn toward her. 'You should sit. You look tired.'
Her smile stays in place. Her mind does not.
The clerk slides the papers closer. I take them without taking the pen.
The page names me as a woman leaving by choice. The stamped pass promises a clear road. The agreement cuts the twins away from their father before the pack knows they exist.
I fold the papers once and hold them against my side.
Kael watches the blank signature line.
Let him think I am too broken to understand what he offered. I understand everything. I am counting.
The amber gathers around the woman in white for the last time. Her face remains gentle, but the thought beneath it stops the square inside me.
*Vessa is alive, and Aldren moved her into the archive last night.*
