Chapter 8: The Chipped Tooth
Three days into my leave, I met Clover for lunch on the hospital's side lawn, where my guard could watch from the truck.
She had brought two sandwiches and a bag of gossip.
"The lieutenant is still in bed four," she said. "He's still sedated, no change. They put a soldier outside his door, and the colonel comes every night after dark."
"Every night?"
"At two in the morning. Everyone on nights has seen him." She bit into her sandwich. "He doesn't go in. He just stands in the hall for an hour and then he leaves."
I thought of the paper cup on the nurses' station, and I did not know why.
"Also," Clover said, leaning in, "Dr. Colquitt called every nurse who worked the lockdown into his office this week. One at a time. He asked each of us who was on the floor and who had been near the back stairs."
"What did you say?"
"That I was in the supply closet fixing your outfit. He laughed. He said, 'That girl always did need rescuing.'"
I put my sandwich down.
"Leah!"
I looked up.
Dr. Colquitt was walking toward us across the grass in his white coat, with his silver hair lifting in the wind.
He was smiling the way he always did.
"My dear girl. I'm so glad I caught you."
He took both my hands in his.
"I wanted to say congratulations in person. I know the timing is a little odd, but we all need our people at a time like this. And I'm sorry about the leave. It's only for your own good. You were so brave."
