Chapter 14: Her Father's Porch Light

Nolan's POV

"I'll start," I said.

Lena's father looked at me for a long moment.

Then he pulled a kitchen chair out from the table and sat down in it with his coat still on.

"Go ahead."

Lena did not sit.

She stood by the window with her arms folded and watched me, and I understood she would not help me with a single word.

I told him all of it, in order, the way I had told her on the dock.

I left nothing out, and he did not make me say any of it twice.

I said the word vasectomy to a man who has sold hammers for forty years, and it sounded ugly in his daughter's cabin.

He didn't interrupt.

When I ran out, a branch scraped the roof, and the stove ticked.

"Two years," he said.

"Yes, sir."

"She came to my porch every other Sunday for two years and asked her mother what was wrong with her."

"I know."

"You don't know." He said it quietly. "You weren't on the porch."

He turned his head.

"Lena. How long have you known?"

"Since last September, Dad."

"And you told me nothing."

"I wanted him to tell me first."

My father rubbed his face with one big hand.

"You two," he said. "I raised one daughter to say it out loud, and the other one to hold it in, and I married you into a family that does neither."

Lena almost smiled, and then her mouth shook.

He got up and crossed the floor and held her, one arm around her shoulders.

She let him.

I stayed where I was, because there was nothing in the room that belonged to me.

Over her head, he looked at me again.

"Why?"

"Sir?"
