Chapter 19: Canal Street
Laurent moved Gambit up between me and the buggy without a word.
"You'd be the brother," he said. "The one with the beard. They told me in town to look for the beard."
"What do you want?" Laurent said.
"Five minutes with the lady." He tapped ash over the wheel. "I've waited three hours in the cold for them."
I got down off Sable.
I stood on my side of it and he sat on his, and I let him talk.
"Monsieur Armand owes me a sum of money," he said. "You know the sum. Everybody in this parish seems to know the sum."
"Eleven thousand dollars."
"Eleven thousand, two hundred, as of Tuesday." He smiled again. "I don't like to be a creditor at a funeral. I like a creditor at a wedding. I was promised a wedding on New Year's Day, mademoiselle, and you dropped the ring in a glass."
"So you came to tell me to pick it back up?"
"Oh, no. That ship sailed." He leaned his elbow on the side of the buggy. "Now I have a different plan. If Brimstone wins the Cup, Monsieur Armand has eight thousand dollars on New Year's afternoon. And I have a good deal of my own money on Brimstone at very kind odds."
