Chapter 4: Pinned
I didn't get in.
"I'll ride," I said. "My mare's at your house anyway."
"Your mare is at my house because my nephew sold her to my other nephew." Aunt Odile opened the carriage door from inside. "Get in, or I'll have the dressmaker come here and do it in front of your sister."
So I got in, mud and all.
She didn't say a word for two miles.
She read her prayer book with one gloved finger on the line.
The sewing room at Belle Rive was on the second floor, with long windows over the bayou.
The dressmaker from town was waiting with her mouth full of pins.
She was a small, tired woman who had made every Lacombe dress since I was christened.
When she saw my trousers, she swallowed a pin.
The gown was laid out on a table under a sheet.
Aunt Odile pulled the sheet away herself.
Ivory satin, heavy as a coffin pall.
A collar up to the jaw, sleeves to the knuckles, forty covered buttons down the back.
It was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen, and I hated it on sight.
"It was made for me," Aunt Odile said, "in 1856."
I looked at her.
"I didn't need it." She smoothed the satin. "You will."
The dressmaker got me out of my trousers behind a screen and into the gown.
It took twenty minutes.
When she turned me to the long glass, I didn't know the woman in it.
She had my face and none of my shoulders.
The collar held my chin up whether I liked it or not.
"Stand still," Aunt Odile said.
"I am standing still."
"You fidget like your father." She walked a slow circle around me. "He fidgeted all the way through his own wedding."
"You were at Papa's wedding?"
