Chapter 12: The Last Night

The fireworks went off over the lake on Saturday night, and nobody from the Rask side of the house came down to watch.

On Sunday they ate in shifts and stayed out of each other's way.

Colin had slept on the porch sofa for two nights, and Brooke's husband had carried the girls' things to the loft so Gail could have a bed.

On Sunday night I took my shoes off and went out to the dock.

I heard him coming before I saw him, the slap of his flip-flops on the boards.

"Jen."

"I'm not talking about the money tonight."

"I don't want to talk about the money." He sat down beside me, close, but not touching. "I want to talk about us."

His beard was uneven and his eyes were swollen.

He looked like the man I had married, and I had to look away from him.

"I messed up," he said. "I know I did. I was scared of Mom finding out, and then the lie got big, and then I couldn't stop it. I never meant to hurt you."

"You took my pay and handed it out as your own."

"I was going to pay it back."

"You said that about the card number, too."

"Babe, please." His voice broke. "We can fix this. You said it yourself, you've never made a scene in five years. I know you still love me. Say you'll give me one more chance."
