Chapter 6: Exhibit A
The Jefferson County courthouse smelled of floor wax and wet umbrellas.
I wore the one blazer that still buttoned and carried Charlie in the sling against my chest.
My lawyer walked beside me in flat shoes, with a briefcase older than I was.
"Don't talk unless the judge asks you," she said. "Don't look at Carter. Look at me or look at the baby."
"What if Charlie cries?"
"Then he cries. Judges have mothers."
Taryn was waiting outside the courtroom in her gray cardigan.
She hugged me hard, and I felt her shaking.
"I wanted to be here," she said. "I told my work I'd take the day."
"You don't have to testify," my lawyer told her. "It's an emergency motion. There's no live testimony today."
"Okay," Taryn said. "Okay. I'll just sit with her."
She sat in the first row behind us.
Across the aisle, Carter sat beside Simone Mercier in a navy suit.
His mother sat behind them with her handbag on her lap and her mouth pressed flat.
She did not look at me, or at her grandson.
The judge came in and the room stood.
She was a gray-haired woman with half-glasses, and she read the motion in silence for what felt like a very long time.
"Ms. Mercier," she said at last. "Your motion alleges a mother of a six-week-old is unfit to care for him. What's the factual basis?"
"Your Honor, the respondent left the family home at night with the infant, with no income, no plan and no notice. She has been reported by an eyewitness as severely sleep-deprived and emotionally unstable. The father is simply asking for temporary orders until a full hearing can be held."
