Chapter 10: The Door

Elias's POV

The night before the Moon Court, I broke my own rule.

For six years I had sat outside her door in a chair.

I had never once knocked.

I knocked now.

The stitches pulled when I lifted my hand, and I ignored them.

The healer had told me to stay in bed for another week.

I had told her I would stay in a chair.

It was the same thing, and we both knew it was not.

The door opened.

Mara stood there in a plain grey nightdress with her brown hair loose down her back.

She had been crying. Her eyes were swollen, and her chin was set.

"You should be lying down," she said.

"I should."

"Then why are you here?"

I had a hundred answers, and I had rehearsed none of them.

"Tomorrow the King will pronounce the dissolution," I said. "After that I will no longer have a reason to stand outside your door."

She went still.

"I wanted to say it before the reason is gone."

"Say what?"

My mouth was dry.

I looked at her bare feet on the cold floor.

"That I would sit in that chair for another six years," I said. "If you let me."

For a long moment she did not speak.

Then she stepped back and held the door wide.

"Come in," she said.

I did not move.

"Rule three," I reminded her. My voice came out low and rough. "You have not given me leave."

"I gave you leave for stairs."

"Yes."

"This is not a stair."

She crossed the floor between us in three steps.

She put both hands flat on my chest, away from the bandage.
