Chapter 14: What He Offers
I dressed before I opened the door.
Elias was already on his feet behind me, bandaged, in his patrol coat, and he did not say a word.
That was rule one, and he kept it.
Outside, the cold took my breath.
Bastian looked up from the snow.
His coat was wet through to the knees, and his shoulder had bled into the collar.
He had been there all night.
"Mara," he said.
"Get up, Bastian."
"Not until you hear me."
"I heard you for six years," I said. "You didn't say much."
Down the path, the patrol was coming out of the barracks in twos and threes.
The grizzled warrior from the north fence led them, and they stopped a short way off.
They did not come closer, and they did not leave.
Bastian saw them and swallowed.
"The elders have frozen the pack accounts," he said. "The King's men took my loan notes. The grain money is locked, and the warriors will not take my orders."
"That sounds like a bad week," I said.
"My mother has shut herself in her rooms. Nobody can find the household keys, because nobody but you ever knew where they were."
"I hung them on a hook by the pantry door, Bastian. For six years."
His face twisted.
"I did not know that."
"I know you didn't."
He pressed both hands into the snow.
"Come back. Be Luna again. I will say before the whole pack that I was wrong."
I stared at him.
"You want me back."
"I want the pack whole." He took a breath. "Odette can stand as second Luna, beside you. Two women, one hall. It is done in other territories."
