Chapter 21: What He Asks

Elias's POV

The King waited until the hall had emptied.

Then he walked down from his chair and stood in front of me, close enough that I could see the grey in his beard.

"Sit," he said.

"I'll stand, Your Majesty."

"As you like." He folded his hands behind him. "I have a question, and then I have an offer. The question first."

"Yes."

"Why did you never say it?"

I knew what he meant.

"I had an order," I said.

"From a man you did not respect."

"From my Alpha."

"For six years."

"Yes."

"And the first night that order lapsed, you were on her doorstep."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

The King looked at me for some time.

"My father made that girl a Luna on a drunken whim," he said. "I was at the gala. I told him it was cruel, and he laughed. He said the Holt boy would be good for her."

I said nothing.

"My father was often wrong," he said. "I have had to spend my first year as King correcting him."

He turned and walked to the window.

"The Holt pack is finished as it stands. The Alpha has lost his bond, his mother and his seat on my council. The elders will take his title by spring."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"The patrol is not finished."

I looked up.

"The Black Forest is the longest border in my territory and the most dangerous. Your men hold it. They took a Luna's orders at the wall on no authority but her word. I have not seen it done in all my years."

"They are good men."

"They are your men."

He faced me.

"I am cutting the Black Forest away from Holt. It will be its own pack, under its own Alpha, sworn to me. I mean to name you."

The floor felt unsteady under my boots.
