Chapter 7: The Armory
"Forty rogues," Elias said. "Against thirty patrol and a fence."
He was already pulling a rack of silver-edged blades down from the wall.
"I will take the north line. Luna, you will go back to the house and bar the door."
"No," I said.
"Mara."
"The Alpha is gone, and the Beta is going to the wall." I took a patrol coat off the hook by the door. It hung almost to my knees. "That makes me the one who answers for the pack."
"You have never been to the wall."
"Then I will learn tonight."
"Luna." His voice was rough. "Please. I have not asked you for anything in six years."
I looked at him.
It was a strange thing to say, and he knew it as soon as it left his mouth. A muscle jumped in his jaw.
"Four days," I said. "Until the moon, you take my orders. You said so in front of the hall."
He closed his eyes briefly.
"Then I am not asking as your Beta."
"I know what you are asking," I said. "I am still going."
Nobody on the patrol said a word. The grizzled warrior was already tightening a strap and pretending not to listen.
A young warrior near the door looked at me, then at Elias.
"Luna," he said. "Where do you want us?"
I had never given a battle order in my life.
But I had spent six years learning where every man in this pack slept, ate and was needed.
"Six at the fence, three at the gate, the rest in two lines behind the stables," I said. "Nobody goes alone. Send the youngest to wake the sick house and tell them to bar the doors."
