Chapter 15: Item Six

Cooper got out of the truck slowly.

The gravel was cold under his boots, and the porch light threw a yellow circle across the steps.

Jonas stood at the edge of it with his keys in his hand and his face wrecked.

"I called Emory this morning," Cooper said.

Jonas did not move.

"I told the woman I'd been throwing away her letters. She was very polite about it. I asked what I had to do to get on the list." He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded napkin. "Rudy drove me to Atlanta this afternoon. They drew my blood. They'll want more Monday."

"Cooper."

"I'm not done," Cooper said.

"Okay."

"I'm not doing it for you." His voice shook. "I'm doing it for item six."

He held out the napkin.

Jonas took it with a hand that wasn't steady.

It was a clean one from the diner, and Cooper had written on it in Rudy's passenger seat on the way home.

Be bored with Jonas Brannen for fifty years.

Jonas read it once.

Then he read it again, and his shoulders came down, and a sound came out of him that was not quite a word.

"I laughed at you," Cooper said, "because I was nineteen, and my mother was dying, and you were beautiful and leaving, and I thought if I got ahead of the joke, it wouldn't kill me. I was wrong. It killed me for five years. I'd like a chance to take it back."
