Chapter 20: Whose Store
I didn't stand up.
I sat behind my desk, a door on two sawhorses, and looked at him.
"Write you," I said.
"One last time. The closing." He came two steps closer, into the light. "You know how. Nobody's ever written me like you."
"Nobody's written you at all, Blaine. That's the point."
"Ree. I'm offering you his building."
"You're offering me back a building you bought from a bank, if I give you the one thing you can't buy."
He smiled, the dentist's-billboard smile.
"Everybody has a price. Your father had one. He sold that bank his whole store for a loan he couldn't pay back."
I stood up then.
"Get out of my office."
"Think about it."
"I thought about it for four years. Get out."
He went.
The bell rang behind him.
I locked the door, and then I called Reuben from the office phone, and told him every word before Blaine's Tahoe was off Front Street.
"Are you all right?" he said.
"I'm furious."
"Good," he said. "That's your best voice."
