Chapter 17: The Mothers' Fund

The Rudolfinum had a red carpet, a wall of cameras and a banner four meters wide.

THE MOTHERS' FUND, it said. HELPING WOMEN WHO CANNOT HAVE CHILDREN.

Under it was a photograph of Bethany in a white dress, with a hand pressed to her heart.

I stopped on the carpet.

"You can still turn around," Jakub said.

He wore Hana's late husband's black suit, let out at the shoulders, and he looked like a man who had never owned a tie and had learned to tie one in the car.

"No."

"Then take my arm."

I took it.

Under my green dress and my coat, the small curve of my stomach was starting to show.

I had decided not to hide it.

Inside, four hundred people stood under a gold ceiling holding champagne, and half of them turned when the door opened.

Some knew my face from the funeral photographs.

A woman in pearls dropped her glass.

It rolled across the marble, and nobody picked it up.

"That's her," someone whispered. "The Ostby girl."

"She's dead."

"She's pregnant!"

I walked down the middle of the hall with my chin up.

At the far end, in a navy tuxedo, with a gray face and a small flat microphone taped inside his collar, Brecken stood among his mother's friends.

His chief was two steps behind him.

Brecken looked at me, and I gave him one nod.

That was all.

That was the plan.

I walked a little further, and Bethany appeared in front of me.

She was in white silk with her hair loose, and she wore her hair and her jaw exactly the way I wore mine.

She looked radiant, and she opened her arms.
