Chapter 15: The Pass Road
Nobody at the table said anything.
Then Finlay's chair scraped back.
"If she goes, Dad, I go."
"Sit down, son."
"No."
Alasdair didn't look up from his plate.
"You'll sit down in my house when I tell you."
"Then it's not my house," said Finlay.
I walked out of the dining room before anyone could watch me cry.
Upstairs in the blue room I threw things in my suitcase without folding them.
The good brushes went in their canvas roll in my coat pocket, where nobody could take them.
The napkin was already in my sketchbook.
There was a knock on the corridor door.
Not the papered one.
"It's only me," said Elspeth.
She came in on her stick and sat on the end of the four-poster, breathing hard from the stair.
She had a small box in her lap, old red leather, worn pale at the corners.
"Sit," she said.
I sat beside her.
She opened the box.
Inside, on yellowed silk, was a silver brooch the size of a coin.
Two hearts twined together under a little crown.
