Chapter 18: The Ceilidh

I didn't wave back.

I walked out of the kirkyard gate and across the shore road, straight into the hall car park.

Euan watched me come, smiling.

The grey-haired man looked at me.

"Ailsa," said Euan. "This is the buyer's solicitor. Down from Inverness for the bells."

"Does he know where you were on the twenty-ninth?" I said.

The solicitor's eyebrows went up.

Euan's smile didn't move.

"Family," he said to him. "You'll have heard."

"Stay for midnight," I told the solicitor. "You'll hear the rest."

I walked away before either of them could answer.

The village hall at Kinlochmorran held three hundred people if nobody breathed.

By eleven that night it held more.

Every tenant and shepherd and ghillie in the glen was there, with their wives and grown children.

The young farmers wore kilts with their shirts already untucked.

Paper chains hung from the rafters.

The band was on the stage at the far end, a fiddle and an accordion and a drum.

At the top table under the clock sat Alasdair, my mother in silver, Euan, and the solicitor with his leather folder by his plate.
