Chapter 14: What Hetta Saw
Hetta was waiting for me in the kitchen yard, with flour on her arms and her chin up.
She had watched the whole thing from the bakehouse door.
"Don't say it," I told her.
"I wasn't going to say anything."
"You were going to say you're sorry."
"I was going to say the bread will go stale if you stand there."
She almost smiled.
Then it went out of her face.
"They'll sit tomorrow noon," she said.
"Every lord, and the steward at the head of the table with that voice."
"They'll ask what the Alpha knew and when."
"And nobody in that hall will say what happened at the cellar door."
I took her by both floury wrists.
"You will."
Her gold tooth caught the light as her mouth tightened.
"Girl, you don't know what you're asking."
"I know exactly what it cost my mother."
"She hung eleven years ago because the one person who saw the steward was too scared to open her mouth."
