Chapter 20: Trade
"Alpha of Brenmoor!" the south Alpha called across the water.
"You will leave your wolves on your bank.
"You will walk out to the sandbar in the middle of the river, alone and unarmed, with the House ring on your hand."
"You will kneel and give the ring to my friend the steward.
"Then I give you your sister."
Ketil had gone back to a man.
He stood in the shallows in his torn trousers with his leg bleeding and his chest heaving.
The Beta's riders pulled up on the bank behind us and handed down a cloak.
I took it, because I had no smock left.
I wrapped it round me and went to stand beside him.
"I'll do it," said Ketil, low.
"No," I said.
"Thyra."
"You walk out there and kneel, and then they have you, and her, and the ring.
"Listen to me."
He was listening.
His eyes were on Sigrun's white face across the water, and his hand on my arm was crushing it.
"The Fallow Ford is a mile upstream," I said.
"The envoy let it slip.
"The south doesn't know we know.
"They have every man watching this bank.
"So send the Beta's riders over the Fallow Ford now, and let them come down behind the reeds."
