Chapter 20: Under Her Orders
The bar went quiet around us.
Parker crossed the room in six long strides.
He took Kent by the back of the collar and hauled him off the stool.
"He's drunk," Parker said to the room, smiling with all his teeth. "Too much champagne. Good night, everybody."
He marched Kent out through the lobby, past the harpist.
He never once looked at me.
That was how I knew.
At eight the next morning I called the number on the detective's card.
"Ms. Atwater," she said. "I saw the video of you and the microphone. My lieutenant's played it four times."
"I want to give you a statement. About October ninth, two years ago. At the widow's kitchen table, so she hears it too."
There was a pause on the line.
"I'll bring the good pen," she said.
We sat around the widow's table on O Street that afternoon. Three women and a silver flip phone.
The detective listened to the voicemail twice. The second time she closed her eyes.
"He's got somebody with him," she repeated quietly.
Then I told her everything. The coat, the wine that wasn't wine, two-ten in the morning, the scissors.
