Chapter 13: Ask Me
The driver took the causeway with the heat on high and nobody spoke.
I sat in the back seat of the black Lincoln, and Declan sat in the front beside the driver, which he had never done.
He had gone out of the Starlite ahead of me and held the car door and stepped away from it.
He had not said a word since the long table.
The bay went by in the window, black and flat, with the lights of Brigantine strung out on the far shore.
I had a sentence in my mouth and I did not like the taste of it.
"Ask me," I said.
The driver's eyes flicked up to the mirror and went back to the road.
Declan did not turn his head.
"Ask you what, Miss Dunleavy?"
"What I'm going to say on the ninth." My voice was flat. "You've got a month. You've got a man in a gray overcoat writing in a notebook and a table full of dancers. Ask me."
"No," Declan said.
"I'm giving you leave."
"I know you are," Declan said.
"You promised in your kitchen you'd never ask," I said. "I'm telling you that you may."
He was quiet for the length of a telephone pole.
"I gave you my word on a night you had no reason to believe me," he said. "If I take it back the first time it gets expensive, it was never worth anything."
"It's your life," I said.
"It is," Declan said. "That's why I can't."
I leaned forward until my arms rested on the seat back.
I was close enough to see the back of his neck, and the place where his collar had gone damp.
