Chapter 11: The Grey House

I changed back on the grass with no idea how.

One moment I stood on four legs among the beeches.

The next I was on my knees on cold leaves, naked and shaking, with my hair in my eyes and the whole ring staring.

Peigi reached me first.

She dropped her coat over my shoulders and put her arms round me.

"There, hen," she said. "There, my lamb. Breathe."

"What was that?" I said. "What did I do?"

"You did what you were born to," said Peigi, and she was crying.

I stood up in her coat.

Three hundred people were still on their knees.

Nobody had moved.

Coll was kneeling at the front, and his eyes were on me.

I had never seen a man look so stripped.

"It isn't a trick," he said, hoarse, to the silence. "Dear God. It was never a trick."

An old woman rose from the front row, leaning on a stick.

She had a deeply lined face and white hair down to her waist.

"A grey wolf," she said, in a cracked voice that carried to the trees. "I have not seen the grey since I was a girl."

"Sit down, woman," said the Reeve.

"I'll not," said the old woman.
