Chapter 6: The Bothy
The bothy was one stone room with an iron cot, a tin stove and a lantern.
I had it lit and the stove going before he had finished telling me to go home.
"Sit," I said.
He sat on the cot.
I cut the sleeve off his shirt with the scissors from the tin and looked at his forearm.
Four deep punctures ran in a curve from wrist to elbow, with the flesh swollen black around them.
"That's a jaw," I said.
"It's nothing."
"It's a Lorne man's jaw, and you went out to meet him on the road because he came to look at the gate."
His eyes came up sharply.
"Peigi," I said. "She misses nothing."
I cleaned the bites with water from the kettle, and he sat rigid and let me.
When I poured the iodine he swore softly and gripped the edge of the cot.
"Hold still," I said.
"I am," he said.
"You're not. You've been shaking since I came in the door."
"It's cold," he said.
"It's not."
I wound the bandage round and round.
I tied it off and sat back on my heels.
His good hand rose and brushed my cheek, and I felt the whole of the day come down on me.
His thumb was on my lower lip.
"Careful," Coll said quietly.
I took his wrist in my hand and put his palm flat on the blanket.
"Lie back," I said.
"Ishbel."
"Lie back, or I'll tie you."
He went very still.
"Tie me," he said.
I had not expected that.
I had a hank of red wool in my pocket that I'd taken from Peigi's sewing basket that morning, without asking myself why.
I held it up, and the lantern lit it scarlet.
He lay back on the cot and put both arms above his head.
I looped the wool twice around his wrists and knotted it to the iron frame.
I tied it to hold and not to hurt, and I checked the knot with two fingers under the loop.
"Too tight?" I asked.
"No."
"Tell me if it is."
"It isn't," he said.
I stood and looked down at him.
He lay stretched out on the grey blanket with his shirt hanging in two pieces.
He was a scarred, broad-chested man on his back with his wrists tied, and he was watching me with his whole attention.
I pulled my jumper over my head.
I unhooked my bra and let it fall.
His chest rose, and a muscle moved in his stomach.
"Don't look away," I said.
"I'd not."
I knelt beside him on the cot and undid his belt and drew his trousers down.
He was already hard.
I took him in my hand, and I did not hurry.
I stroked him from root to tip with a loose, slow fist.
