Chapter 8: The Long Table
Ishbel's POV
On the last Saturday of October the chiefs of Kintail and Lorne came to dine at Ardach House, and I was told to carry.
Peigi did the cooking and I did the carrying, with a white apron over my tunic and a tray of venison in each hand.
"Eyes down, hen," Peigi said at the dining-room door. "Don't speak unless they speak to you."
"And if they speak?"
"Then be short."
The dining room had a table for twenty-four, a fire the size of a doorway and portraits of dead Macraes on every wall.
Fourteen wolves sat at it in dark jackets, with the two visiting chiefs on either side of Coll.
The Kintail chief was a lean old man with a white beard.
The Lorne chief was heavy and bald, with huge pale hands, and he looked me up and down as I came in.
Then something strange happened.
Every wolf at that table turned its head toward me.
It was slight, a tilt of the chin, a lifted nostril, a shift of the shoulders.
Fourteen men did it together, and not one of them seemed to know they had.
