Chapter 16: What Alister Said
Alister's office was on the fortieth floor of the harbor tower.
At six in the morning it held only the three of us and a banker's box.
He sat behind a desk the size of a rowboat.
Cullen stood in front of it.
I sat in a chair by the window, where Alister had put me.
"You asked me to be here," I said.
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because you set the rules," he said. "I want you to hear what I say inside them."
He looked at Cullen.
"You took one night from us and made it nineteen years."
"Yes."
"I'm going to tell you what that cost. I won't raise my voice. You will not answer."
Cullen nodded.
Alister put both hands flat on the desk.
"My father drove the harbor road every Saturday for eleven years."
"Same hour."
"He thought she might walk out of the crowd."
"His cardiologist told him to stop."
"He didn't."
The window behind him was full of pale pink sky.
"Linus did not speak for a month. At twelve. Then he started cooking, because a pot needs someone standing at it."
"Alister," I said.
"Let me finish."
He didn't look at me.
