Chapter 22: Birthday
They had emptied the room on the third floor.
The steel shelves were gone, and the nineteen boxes, and the whole wall of maps.
What was left was a bare wood floor in morning light, with a yellow quilt spread across the middle.
My family sat around its edges in pajamas.
"Surprise," said Bram, with a party horn.
It made a sad little noise.
"You have no breath," said Linus.
"I used it all on the stairs."
"Sit," said my mother, patting the quilt. "We do this on the floor. It's the only way I know how."
I sat.
Linus pushed a cake into my lap.
It was a round yellow cake with a single candle, and the frosting had been done by a man who clearly had never done frosting.
"I made this one when I was twelve," he said. "The year you were gone."
"It was a disaster and I hid it in the garage."
"You kept it?"
"I made it again from the recipe I wrote on the back of my hand. It's the same bad cake."
He lit the candle with a kitchen match.
"Make a wish."
I looked around the circle.
Alister was sitting upright with his hands on his knees.
Bram was bouncing.
