Chapter 21: Taken Down

A detective in a gray raincoat got out of the first patrol car and walked straight to me.

"Mrs. Kane. We took Whitney Dray's statement on Monday," he said. "We were waiting for the call."

"I called you at nine," I said.

"I remember. You said she'd burn the ledgers."

"She tried."

He looked at the scorched drum and the gasoline soaking the gravel, and he nodded to the two uniformed officers behind him.

They crossed to Margot, who sat on the ground with a driver's jacket around her shoulders.

"Margot Dray," the detective said. "You're under arrest for fraud, forgery and the destruction of evidence."

"There will be more charges, and a lawyer will explain them."

"I haven't done anything," Margot said.

Her voice had gone high and cracked.

"Ma'am, you set a fire in front of forty witnesses."

"Please. Call my lawyer."

"You can call him from the station."

The handcuffs went on her wrists, over the white bandage a paramedic had wrapped.

Every driver in the yard watched.

Nobody jeered, and nobody spoke, and that was worse than any noise.
