Chapter 10: The Board

The boardroom of Lindahl Cold Storage had a long oak table and a window onto the loading docks.

Eight chairs sat around the table, and Barnaby's end of it was already full.

Barnaby took the head chair with a gavel his mother had carried for forty years.

His three outside directors sat down on his right, in grey suits, with their hands folded.

Emerson took the seat on his left and pulled the trust's empty chair out for herself.

I sat in the second row, against the wall.

Lavinia was waiting outside the door with Sullivan so that he could make an entrance.

"This meeting is called to order," Barnaby said. "We have a formal offer from Halden Row Capital for all of Lindahl Cold Storage. Mr. S has agreed to present it himself."

The door opened.

Sullivan came in with his hair combed back and a leather folder under one arm.

He walked the length of the table and put a hand on every chair he passed.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he said. "Thank you for having me."

He did not look at the second row.

He spoke for ten minutes.

I knew every word, because I had written the first draft of the speech in a London hotel six years ago.

"A family business," he said, "is a living thing. Halden Row doesn't buy buildings. We buy futures."

The outside directors nodded.

"We offer one hundred and ten million dollars, in cash, at closing. Every employee is retained for twelve months."

"Twelve months," Emerson said.

"A year is a very long time in logistics."

"It isn't a promise."

"It's a standard clause," Sullivan said smoothly. "The offer stands until Monday."
