Chapter 13: Alone
"Well," Kip said into the handheld. "Tent 9 is a party of one."
He let that sit.
Two crew members were already pulling the stakes out of Tent 9.
They folded it up with Huck's spare socks still inside and carried it to the production tent.
"Day twelve," Kip said, reading off his card. "The high traverse. Two miles of open scree to a food cache on the far shoulder. Teams cross together."
He looked at me.
"Solo teams cross alone."
I packed my own forty pounds.
Nobody helped me, because I'd said nobody could.
They helped anyway.
The Tulsa grandmother came over while I laced my boots and pushed a foil packet into my lid pocket.
"Peanut butter and honey," she said. "Don't argue with me. I outrank you."
The Missoula brothers split their last bag of trail mix three ways and put one third on my log without a word.
The younger Butte sister handed me a pair of dry socks.
"They're mine," she said. "So they're probably cursed."
"Thank you."
