Nobody said anything.
Roy put his fork down very slowly.
"Live," I said.
"Live." Kip smiled. "The last two teams race down Mill Creek to this porch. America watches the winner touch your father's door. Or watches you lose it."
"You're not filming my dad's porch."
"We booked the porch, Laramie. You signed for it in August." He lifted his coffee toward the windows. "Every cabin but one. Paid in full."
The woman in the camel coat was watching me, not him.
She hadn't said a word.
I looked back at her and kept my mouth shut about cameras.
Four million dollars' worth of shut.
"Well," the Tulsa grandmother said from Dad's armchair. "Since you're here, young man, the biscuits are gone."
Kip laughed.
Then he and the woman went out to the SUV, and the room breathed again.
In the morning I came down at six to start the coffee and found Huck already in the dining room.
He was sitting at the long table across from my mother and his father.
He'd asked them to come down early.
